Pollution and Cancer

The world has witnessed a significant drop in the air quality index during the last decade or so, and this crippling quality has breezed in numerous health concerns. Bad thing, Cancer is also amongst the problems to drop anchor in this context.
The major reasons for a declining air index are industrialization and mass urbanization. These have led to a serious increase in cases of lung cancer. Also, air pollution is now being linked to many other types of cancers as well.
Ralph Steinman and the Discovery of Dendritic Cells

Ralph Steinman, a researcher who focused on studying immunity at Harvard Medical School, made significant contributions to understanding the body’s defense against pathogens and infections. His work primarily aimed to uncover the process of immune initiation and the relationship between innate and adaptive immunity. Steinman’s most notable discovery was the identification of dendritic cells, which resolved a longstanding question for the medical community.
Through in vitro studies, Steinman found that lymphocytes alone were insufficient to trigger an immune response. He observed that additional accessory cells were necessary to present antigens to the lymphocytes, thereby initiating the immune response (1). Initially, the assumed accessory cell was a macrophage. To investigate this hypothesis, Steinman collaborated with Physician-scientists Zanvil A. Cohn and James G. Hirsch. They conducted experiments using horseradish peroxidase and immune complexes but failed to find antigens within the macrophages. However, they did make a crucial discovery: the rapid uptake of antigens suggested that macrophages continuously recycle their membranes (1)

SKIN HEALTH – Why prevention is so important

Skin is the biggest organ of the body, It shields us from infections, regulates body temperature, and rebuilds itself on a monthly basis. The skin is very delicate and needs to be protected thoroughly from environmental factors in order to avoid diseases. One of these factors is exposure to UV rays, as sunburns are among the most frequent reasons of skin cancer. Knowing what to look for on your own skin might help you spot cancer early when it’s easiest to treat.
